Artist statement: I am by temperament and by intention a “colorist.” The colors of life are not in what we see. What’s there is produced by how light and substance interact. But what we actually see is what we are capable of seeing. Nature’s palette is infinite. She’s a sorceress, teasing us with her partly-revealed, partly-hidden colors. Colors have to be courted; they give themselves only to those who love them.
It is light that releases color. It is color that gives us life. The more color we can bring to our lives, the richer our lives. To be an artist is to collaborate with nature’s sorcery. To see what is there to see in the painting requires the viewer to collaborate with the artist.
There is beauty and redemption all around us in nature. My aim is to capture the scenes that seduce my senses. What is most familiar to us is what we fail to see. And that is where nature—at its most enchanting—hides.
I prefer untrammeled small-frame landscapes. The world is in the unique, not the commonplace. My intent is to call forth the colors of a place that captured my heart and my imagination. I would wish the same sweet stimulation for those whograsp what I am after in my work.
